007 Bandstand - digital drawing

I have talked to a lot to people this week about my ipad drawings so it seemed like a good opportunity to try something with the ipad a little different. I have tried to recreate a pen and wash way of working to draw the bandstand opposite the Gallery I am showing in this week.

Drop me an email if you are interested in a print of this one dan@danyoungart.co.uk I will produce seven prints as it is day seven of this years dailies!

006 Bandstand

I have been invigilating (lovely word) my show today and there is a wonderful old bandstand opposite the gallery. So, naturally I have done this little watercolour sketch. I might do an oil painting of it over the next few days while I am in the gallery or maybe a pen and ink... I haven't used pen and ink for ages

005 Red Dot - watercolour

I have had a wonderful evening talking to loads of people at the private view of my show 'Dan Young, Daily - 5 Years & Counting' it seemed to go down very well, lots of really lovely things were said about it all. I saw a few old friends and some new ones and even sold a few pictures, hence today's painting of the 'sold' dot. The red dot also has the added advantage of being relatively easy to create, I am really rather plum tuckered. But it has reminded me of a story about the rennassaince artist Duccio discovering a young Giotto drawing perfect circles in the sand.

My best circles often tend to have a slight bulge on the upper right quadrant, I bet Giottos didn't.

004 Display board - pencil

I have been hanging my '5 years & Counting' exhibition today, if you are in the cotswold area do pop in to cheltenham and say hello! More info if you click the banner above. Todays offering is a tired and purposefully crude, yet love-able, drawing of one of the moveable walls in the Gardens Gallery. It holds the framed list I used on the #paintathon day that I held on the 1000th day of this project. Private view tomorrow evening love to see you all there, yes even you lot in Latvia.

003 Stack of Paintings - watercolour and pencil

I have spent all afternoon numbering the paintings from year two, the watercolours, and constantly reminding myself to number them as I go in the future. I thought I would do a painting in the style of the second year of Dan Young, Daily and bring out my watercolours. This is a stack of the small size from that year with the humbug picture on the top. Looking forward to seeing the y2 paintings 'en masse' for the first time at the exhibition. Hanging tomorrow. Wish me luck.

How do we like the in situ shots?

002 Plan of Gardens Gallery - pencil and graphite

I am gearing up to hang my 5 years and counting show on Wednesday, but now I have worked it all out and drawn this plan I think anyone could hang it.

001 Cup of Tea - oil paint - left handed

I thought after five years of continuous daily painting I would give my right hand a day off. It also felt like time for a break. So I have made a left handed painting of my tea break for number 001 this year. I am planning  to do a year of whatever I like this time around. So for the next 364 days I will be doing all sorts of different things. I might spend a week on one single painting I might do a series of digital prints I might do some Lino prints, I might paint with my feet, I might make a drawing of a ukulele I am building I might make a plan of something I am building in the garden I might... You get the idea. I expect there to be individual paintings and maybe a few mini series that run through the year, there will be some more left handed pictures for instance and I'm looking forward to a lot more ways of working.

During last years painting I had to stay in one style all year so I looking forward to this year feeling a lot freer and open to different things. The only rule is I have to make a picture every day. Easy.

I also got it painted before my tea got cold.

Day #365 Sussex Star

This little chicken lady is one of our new hens the brown on the plinth has moved on the better things. She is a Sussex Star, but she isn't laying yet so she might just be a 'Sussex'. You have to earn the title Star. Debbie (birthday girl) brought her in for a visit to the studio which was very helpful, until she started to eye up escape routes. The chicken not Debbie.

must admit to being a little overwhelmed by completing five years of continuous daily painting. I have been selecting work over the last few weeks for the show of the last five years (you are more than welcome to attend please click the banner for more details) which is a bit like floating in a sea of images. Although I think this years single painting with 365 elements will definitely be included alongside a good range from the previous chapters of Dan Young, Daily.

So, tomorrow I begin a new chapter in my daily picture making exploits and I'm not telling you what it is, you will have to look in tomorrow to see picture 1827. Yes 1827.

Day #364 Bunting

I'm putting up the studio bunting in readiness for tomorrow's celebrations, the end of this years painting project and Debbie's birthday! Am I the only artist who has studio bunting?

So, tomorrow I will paint a curtain over the whole lot! Or will I?

Day #363 Shadow

This is the shadow of my hand, I think it is trying to catch the falling feather. I have also worked on some of the other shadows in the painting. I think I will need to work on the overall painting once I have finished adding elements on Saturday. Thee are just a few bits that need a little bit of homogenising. Two more objects to go and I know what one of them is!

I just noticed that I also added a hand coming in from the pictures edge yesterday, sometimes it's like my subconscious mind is making decisions for me... Brilliant!

Day #362 Spider puppet fingers

These creepy green fluffy fingers are from a spider puppet that I used to scare my sister with when I was younger and also more recently.

Day #361 Polyfiller paint

Today I delivered my 'unexpected material' workshop to our wonderful first years. They all witnessed the birth of Polyfiller paint, a juicy thick impasto style paint media. Everyone will be using it soon you'll see. So to celebrate PP I have used some (albeit in its traditional role) in this hole I painted on day #251. The first ever colour for Polyfiller paint was pale yellow. You heard it here first!

Day #360 Stamp

I didn't expect to paint the queens portrait in this years picture, but I bought a load of stamps today. And they are red. I have trouble 'not' painting red things. So I did.

ONLY FIVE DAYS LEFT!

Sunday 17 November 2013

Day #359 Speaker

There isn't very much technology in this painting. Not intentional, but interesting nonetheless. This speaker was ripped out of something with the vague intention of using it for something.

Saturday 16 November 2013

Day #358 Ukulele Template

This is one of the bits of template I used when I made my ukulele earlier this year. Together with this painting I've had quite a productive year in the making department.

Day #356 Sharpie marker

They are great aren't they. Sharpie markers, what did we do before you arrived. This post is not sponsored by sharpie...

Day #355 Paint mediums

I did a day of paint media workshops today, brilliant fun. I do enjoy waffling on about paint and the stuff you mix with paint to make paintings. Here is a little sneaky peak of some of the swatches (which all look surprisingly familiar when it comes to it) a bit of glaze medium, a Matt and a glossy patch as well a big glob of thick juicy impasto medium, my favourite!

Tuesday 12 November 2013

Day #354 Canvas

I did a couple of runs of my world famous canvas and paper stretching workshops today, here is a canvas all ready for tomorrow's paint media workshops.

Technical alert! I will need to do a little bit more painting on this bit when it is dry, it's tricky to cover with the white oil paint.

Monday 11 November 2013

Day #353 Canvas key

This is one of those wooden doohickeys you bang inthe back of your canvas stretcher, if you are a first year student at the University of Gloucestershire, you will know exactly what this is after tomorrow's canvas stretching workshop. If you are not, then you will have to google it!

Day #351 Fresh Egg

This is today's actual egg, a little amazed I haven't painted one of our hens eggs in this years project. Well, now I have so, I will stop being amazed.

Day #349 Bonsai Scissors

I don't just paint and play ukulele you know, sometimes I torture little trees with these scissors. Often to death.

Wednesday 6 November 2013

Day #348 Humbug painting

I have been sorting through the water colour paintings from year two in readiness for my show at the end of the month (get your christmas presents folks!) I liked this picture of a humbug for day 148 year two 20th April 2010. But I  Don't think it quite makes the cut so I'm going to sneak it in by painting a painting of it in this years painting! Confused yet.

Tuesday 5 November 2013

Day #347 Firework

Happy bonfire night everyone! I do like a good flower arrangement with a firework and a paintbrush, you wait everyone will be doing it in 2015!

Monday 4 November 2013

Day #346 Little peg

As I near the end of this years painting I am starting to think about some of the things I wanted to include but haven't yet. This tiny peg is one of them. Tick.

Not long now....

Sunday 3 November 2013

Day #345 Tealight

I have painted a night light (AKA tea light) in celebration of Diwali for today's addition. I really should post a wide shot tomorrow.....

Day #342 Moustache

I have been waiting all year to paint a moustache on this years painting. The main reason for this desire to include a bit of facial hair is that I love the lyric in the Cream Song S.W.L.A.B.R. '..but the picture has a moustache' so, I really wanted this picture to have a moustache. Also, happy Movember to all Mo growers.
