007 Wall Plug

My favourite sized wall plug is the red one, obviously. But it is also the most useful one in my humble opinion. I also like anything that is size colour coded.

006 Button - watercolour

I like yesterday's simple fez and this may become the first mini series within the year of red, simple pure  little watercolours.

005 Mini Fez - watercolour

I have a wonderful little collection of fezzes this is the smallest, approx 5cm across. I think there is a direct correlation between the size of a fez and how amusing it is. But the same could be said for all hats I suppose.

004 Ochre - monoprint

A busy day for the puppy today, young Ochre had her second vet visit this afternoon after going a bit stir crazy this morning, most unlike this calm picture of serenity!

003 Ochre - pencils

This is a portrait of my dog Ochre. She was named after a red Ochre colouring pencil. In fact it was the very pencil that I used to draw this today.

Also, please note the new vibrant red theme for the Dan Young, Daily blog!

002 Kong ball - monoprint

As the proud and tired owner of a new puppy, I am a convert to the religion of the KONG. Dog owners will know what I'm talking about!

And it's red so I am doubley excited.

001 Debbie in a Red Turban (towel)

Welcome to year seven!

The year of RED!

Yes, I will be focusing on the colour red for the next 365 days, today I have made another version of yesterday's portrait of Debbie. This time referencing one of my favourite paintings - 'Man in a Red Turban' by Jan Van Eyck. It is now 'Woman in a Red Towel' and heralds a festival of red, rouge, cadmium, alizarin, rose, scarlet and so on....

Join me as I discover the power of red!

365 Debbie - monoprint

The final day of year six and Debbie's birthday - happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you.... I have of course wished her happy birthday in real life as well! A marvellous day has been had and a bottle of bubbly has been drunk. I wanted to end this year of drawings paintings and prints with a portrait of Debbie, she is the reason I started and am able to continue this little project.... Year seven begins tomorrow!

364 Prayer Plant

I love this plant, mostly for its purple underside but also the way it closes up after it has been watered or left out in the rain. It does this to get as much water to its roots as possible. Clever eh?

Only one day of this years daily doings, tomorrow is Debbie's birthday and the end of this years project so on Monday I begin year seven, yes seven. Which will see me indulge my love of the colour red for a whole year....my heart rate is building already!

363 'Babies Toes'

I think this will probably have a very clever Latin name but we call it babies toes. The real name will come to me at some point......

362 'dead' cactus

This is our 'dead' cactus so called because for about a year after it got knocked out of its pot and lost all of its roots we thought it was dead but we kept it in case it wasn't. It wasn't.

361 Easter/christmas cactus

I think this is supposed to be an Easter cactus (easter flowering) but it is about to flower (near christmas!) but then I always forget which way round it is.....

360 Unknown brain like cactus

I could probably find out what this species of cactus is really called, using the Internet, but I'm busy and we just call it the brain cactus so, you will too!

359 Aloe Vera

This lives on our kitchen windowsill and will ease your burnt burns, should you be unlucky enough to burn yourself in our kitchen.

358 Old mans Beard cactus

This is called an old mans beard cactus because... It looks like an old mans beard. Simple eh?

There is so much 'hair' I have thought it to be dead a few times!

357 Cymbidium

This cymbidium orchid  lives on our bathroom windowsill.... It is spectacular when it flowers. We are, I believe, the sole custodians of the spencer family cymbidium. Keep going pretty orchid!

356 Leopard print succulent leaf - pencils

I love this plant it has the most amazing leaves, which is why I have singled this one out for a bit of observational observing!

Thursday, 13 November 2014

355 Barrel cactus - pencils

This is the granddaddy of all the other barrel cacti that we have (we have a bit of a cutting problem, we can't stop ....) I have to be careful how I describe the age of this plant due to the fact that it was Debbie's when she was a little girl. Let's say it is old for a cactus...and yes it looks like a.......

354 Tom's Plant - pencils

This is actually some kind of yucca but we call it Tom's plant because we rescued it just as our old landlord (Tom) was pruning his huge specimen probably, nearly twenty years ago. It hasn't actually grown very much but we keep persevering!

Tuesday, 11 November 2014

353 Lithops - pencils

Lithops or living stone plants are something I have struggled to grow, I have managed to keep one or two but I think I used to over water them. Seemed to have cracked it now though!

Uh oh I may have just cursed this one...

352 Barrel cactus - pencils

After the interruption from the new puppy yesterday I am back to my final little run of plant drawings for this years eclectic Dan Young, Daily.

Due to puppy based delerium I have forgotten if I have informed the world of next years theme for DYD?

Drumroll......

I am going to spend 365 days indulging my love of the colour red, I can't blimmin wait!

Anyway, back to today's picture of one of our barrel cacti.

351 Ochre - pencils

I would like to introduce you all to Ochre our new puppy! Here she is in uncharacteristic sleeping pose.... She is named Ochre after the colour. In painting terms I think she is a healthy mix of red and yellow ochre, maybe a tinge of sienna in there too. I got the name from the pencil I have made this drawing with, which is one of Debbie's pencils from when she was a human puppy.

Named after a pencil, I don't think there is a better honour.

349 Century Plant - pencils

This one isn't quite a century old yet, probably 10 year or so. A decade plant!

Thursday, 6 November 2014

348 Succulent

With only 17 days left of this years daily pictures I am getting excited about the next 365 paintings, prints and drawings. But I am planning a series of drawings of our house plants in the run up to the final day of year 6! Year 7 will see me indulge my love of a particular hue....

Wednesday, 5 November 2014

347 G clamp

I know I have already painted a g clamp this year. But this one is bigger.

I am getting excited about next years daily paintings, my new 'daily year' begins on the 24th of November, and with a new twist more news soon.....

346 Thumb plane

This is used for planing thumbs, if you are not very careful.

Monday, 3 November 2014

345 Bradawl

This is for Tim, because I didn't have one this morning.

344 Sissors - pencils and watercolour

2/11/14

Slightly late panicked post, I was watching the formula one Grand Prix which finished at midnight and so now it is tomorrow. I did paint the picture on the right day... Honest!

343 juggling balls - pencils

I am a keen amature juggler. In that I am not very good. Here are my balls.
