Day #007 Piece of Paper

detail with piece of paper

Today sees this piece of paper taking advantage of one of yesterdays pieces of blu tac. I found the paper on the floor of the studio. It was lost. It is a very important piece of paper that is just the right thickness (when folded) to keep my ipod nicely snug in its case. Its poorly designed case that needs a piece of paper tucked in it. I have no use for it now because I fashioned a new piece of paper that is currently holdng my ipod very snugly in its case. Was that clear?

Day #006 Blu Tac

You might have spotted I have taken away  a little more than I have added today.Wasn't there a bigger table there? Was there a poster stuck to the wall there?

Day #005 Rubber Band

detail with rubber band

I like elastic bands, not sure where this one came from but it might have held together a bunch of asparagus, its that sort.

The composition feels weighted to the left after todays addition. I think this imbalance will continue for a bit until there is a healthy spread of 'things' across the painting. Very tempting to overload one area and then try and compensate by adding something larger... I also quite fancy making the table smaller soon.

Day #004 Dried Chilli

detail with chilli

Time to crush up the dry chillis, for eating and stopping slugs eating your winter greens!

Colour! I felt the need to squeeze some red paint in nice and early, livens the picture up a bit dontchaknow. Watch out for some pattern coming up soon..

Day #003 A Nail

I have painted a tantalising little nail today, what will hang from it? Will anything hang from it? If something hangs on it will it obscure the nail...?

Day #003
Over the last couple of days I have been asking myself about the space I am slowly creating here and how I might develop it. Will it be a space the viewer can recognise as a believable 'room' or will it take on a strange multiperspective with a variety of different viewpoints...my answer, so far, is both. Lets see how that works.

Day #002 Tabletop

This is quite a relief I now have something to put things on!

I have painted this table all the way across the picture plane but I expect I will obscure quite a bit of it over the year, I might even saw it up (using paint of course!)

Day #001 Plum Bob

Well, here we go again, the first element of the fifth year of Dan Young, Daily. This is going to be very odd, I have never made a painting like this and I can't wait to see what happens. I have begun by adding a lovely vertical line though the use of my plum bob. I hope all you Fibonacci fans will enjoy the positioning of the point ;).

The rules for this year are similar to before but instead of a new painting each day you will see a new element added to this picture. Every day. I will try and obey the normal rules of gravity and physics. Mostly. But look forward to things piled on top of other things. Elements obscuring previous days elements. Some big things, some little things. Things stuck on, things falling off. Things leant against other things, flying things, ephemeral things.....it's going to get pretty crowded!

#366 Chocolate Cake

Another year another cake! This is Debbie's birthday 'Chocolate Jaffa Gateaux' cake. I started this little project the day after Debbie's birthday four years ago which means I always have a Birthday cake to paint on the last day of the project, and we all know how much I like to draw, paint and eat cake...
A big thank you for your company over the last year of 'Dan Young,Daily'. An even bigger thank you if you sponsored next years project, if you haven't yet done so please visit the sponsorship page and claim yourself a print, a painting or a drawing, you can also watch the little film of me explaining what is going to happen over the coming 365 days (no leap year next year!).

I have enjoyed these digital dailies but am really looking forward to getting back into oil paint.

See you tomorrow for a new dawn in daily painting!

#365 Palette Pot

Ordinarily day 365 would be the last day of a year of daily painting but this year is a leap year so I have one more to do... Getting ready for oil painting.

#363 Masking Tape

One of the single most useful tapes for any discerning artist! This stuff isn't very sticky though, which is a shame.

#362 Fan Brush

No, not for fanning yourself while painting, this brush is used for blending areas of paint together to achieve very subtle changes in colour and tone, among other effects. I will be employing its services at some point through next years painting. It's not too late to get involved: One painting, one blog 365 days...

#361 Palette knife

As you all know here at Dan Young, Daily I usually like to document an aspect of my day. Well today I have been bricklaying. As a bricklayer I make a great painter. So, I thought, what better object to depict than a painting trowel (you may know it as a palette knife). Which I am looking forward to using during next years daily painting fun.

#360 Studio Stool

This will be the seat of choice for next years daily painting extravaganza. I may stand up for some of it but this is the correct height for extended periods of painting. This time next week I hope to have posted the first element of the single painting I am planning. I hope you will join me!

#357 Diva

Happy Diwali! I came home to discover that Debbie has made this lovely little Diva made from the clay found under the top soil in our garden! Genius. Here it is reflected in our window.

#356 Priming Brush

I delivered my, much anticipated, priming workshop with our first years today on the good ship 'Fine Art' in the University of Gloucestershire 'fleet'. For extra points they even washed all the brushes! Are you listening all you other ex students of mine!

#355 Snowflake

I've been playing with the laser cutter at work today, it has made my eyes go a bit funny. This is very festive though eh?

#354 Picture Hook

I have been rehanging the staircase today, a bit of a busmans holiday holiday, so I have seen and moved a few of these little fellows. It is also a candidate for the first object in next years painting... Only 13 days to go!

#351 Teabag

Drawing this has really made me want a cup of tea. I rarely have one this late in the day (19:00) but I might just partake.

What do you think of this one? That's right it's rubbish.

I'm really starting to get a bit excited about next years daily painting. With that in mind here is my (badly maintained) painting palette.

#345 Brushroll

A bit of a plug for my new blog today, please head over to 'The Brushroll' where I will be writing blog posts about paint, painting and paintings. And here is my brushroll featuring my fan brush. Which is so nice I haven't used it yet.

#344 Cupcakes

I made a classic batch of cupcakes this morning. I like the recipe, put all of the ingredients in a bowl and whisk for two minutes. Put in the cases and bake for 20 mins.
