125 Red Abstract

I won't be making many witty narrations to the Dan Young, Daily pics for a few days, Debbie, my partners, father died on Wednesday so please forgive my erratic ness over these next few days. I will post and draw when I can, Derek enjoyed following Dan Young, Daily and was one of its biggest fans. Ey up Derek!

This is something I have been working on for a while I don't know why but it seemed appropriate.

122 Glass abstract piece

Please bear (or is it bare) with me over the next few days DYD will be a little erratic. Yesterday's image was taken out of the glass kiln but I have no image if it yet and I am not at home so we will wait for that one. Normal service will resume when I say so!

121 Pink Glass Ukulele

I have spent today, just outside my comfort zone, making sculpture! Yes, for the first time in the six, and a bit, year history of Dan Young, Daily I have gone 3D. We have had the first day of a two day training in our new kiln and today was all about casting glass. This is my open cast glass ukulele which I hope will be predominately pink which ,earns it qualifies for the year of red. I might not sleep, but I have to wait till about 2 o clock tomorrow afternoon.

Till tomorrow lunchtime....

122 Triptych in clay

Friday 20 March 2015

117 Ochres portrait cont.

A bit of body colour, ironically not ochre! I have used sienna and burnt sienna so far!

Wednesday 18 March 2015

Ochres portrait - oil on board

Coming along nicely, trying to resist using white so just adding a few tones with Naples yellow, if you haven't used it you must its a wonderful colour.

Tuesday 17 March 2015

114 Ochres fur - oil on board

Now, it's a busy week, but this is a great way to squeeze in a bit of painting! Slowly slowly catchy puppy painting.

Sunday 15 March 2015

112 Ochre - oil on board

Owing  to her red collar and reddish tones in her fur ochre the puppy qualifies for a painting during the year of red so her goes an oil painting of her facing away from me.

110 Self portrait in a fez, again

So, this is a bit of a cheat, in that I made the lino plate for this print during last years daily nonsense. But today we did a lino and wood cut workshop with the fine art students. As a test piece we used this plate. I loved the colour so much that today's post is dedicated to Pantone red. Mmm mmm.

107 Swatches 2 - oil on canvas

Another swatch painting.... Mostly because it been a long day, and it rhymes with watch and that reminds me of apples silly iwatch. I stopped wearing a watch about five years ago..

Sunday 8 March 2015

105 Tints - oil paint

My main red oil colours that I use on my palette, from the top burnt sienna, carmine lake extra cadmium red dark, cadmium red light and brilliant rose. Each one with its tint alongside with progressively more zinc white.

Saturday 7 March 2015

104 colour range - pencil crayons

Here is a basic layout of the range of colour that is permissible during this years painting marathon. From red to orange to pink to magenta to burnt sienna and everything I between.

Friday 6 March 2015

103 Squashed cocktail umbrella - pastel, wet pva, pencil and graphite stick

I was talking to a potter today about colour, hello Patrick! And I got caught by this idea of pink being special because of its name. What is it? It is pale red, it's red with white in it. What do we call blue with white in? Pale blue. and yellow, pale yellow. So, why did pink get its own name and not just pale red.

102 Hill Running

We went up on top of the world today (well cleeve common) and it was Ochres first off the lead run somewhere really big.. She freaking lived it!

101 Puppy Class

Here is the class doing stay practice... With varying levels of results...

I have found myself thinking about a Manic Street Preachers song lyric recently; 'I paint....things I wanna see...' I forget which song it is from but think that was advice I took to heart when I was a fledgling painter and might be one of my primary thoughts when beginning painting or drawing. There is something very freeing about the simplicity of an idea like that, I think this year of red pictures came out of thinking in that way as did tonight's puppy class drawing. So, I call on you people of the world to make what you wanna make, sing what you wanna hear and cook what you wanna to eat!

Tuesday 3 March 2015

100 tower of guitars

Wow, I nearly forgot to daily picture make! Here it is a tower of guitars and ukuleles. I have a thing for towers.

Monday 2 March 2015

099 Doodling!

Wow! This is the first time I have properly doodled during the seven years of this project..... I drew the guitar on the right then thought bugger it isn't red then my mind started wandering about this idea of 'guitar portraits' that keeps popping up in my head and o found myself doodling this little pic of some of my geetars. These would be nice prints... In red of course.

098 Variation on etching III

I thought I would try a few different ideasfor the next stage of my etching, this one full for instruments...

Saturday 28 February 2015

097 Two guitars a ukulele and a Morandi

I have been playing around with one of he not so good prints I made yesterday, I think it needs some more stuff in it. So I have added a doorway, a  morandi etching, one of my paintings and a guitar slide...

Friday 27 February 2015

096 Three Guitars - etching

Okay, so, you are right, technically this is not red, but in my head it is a lovely dark red line. But today was all about getting the plate etched and then the afternoon getting a good print. This was the best one and soon I will print a run of red ones.

Thursday 26 February 2015

Tuesday 24 February 2015

093 Red Resonator - sharpie

Another sketch for my etching this time focusing on one guitar, my metal resonator. If anyone knows the Robert Crumb 'blues and country musician' portraits I was thinking of those while I drew this.

089 Puppy teeth

Another painted roundup of Ochres teeth, not enough to make a necklace yet...

Thursday 19 February 2015

088 Puppy Tooth

So this is the tooth that was coming loose as the vet was trying to look inside Ochres mouth. Not the best time to attempt such a procedure. It didn't go well for the vet, sorry Emma the vet.

Wednesday 18 February 2015

087 Puppy teeth

I am pretty sure all of Ochres puppy teeth are out now, this is our haul, she ate the rest. The last one came out at puppy class tonight, no I didn't crawl around the floor looking for it....

Tuesday 17 February 2015

086 puppy teeth

Teething puppy - The story so far, these are our only finds and there are three to go, and much whining was had by all.

Monday 16 February 2015

085 Puppy tooth part three

First of all I am sorry for the missing image on yesterday's tooth painting. A clear mistake on my part I assure you the painting was painted!

Here is today's canine offering, a canine.

Sunday 15 February 2015

084 Puppy tooth - oil on Dibond

We have rather fortuitously got two opposite teeth from Ochre, I think this is the left one?

Saturday 14 February 2015

083 Puppy tooth - oil on dibond

Having a puppy is full of lots of very cute and lovely things, there are also lots of things that are less cute. Here is one of them, a bloody puppy tooth. This one avoided the crunch, happy Valentine's Day!

082 Bass guitar pencil on wet primer and linen

I have discovered this week that I like the feel of water soluble pencils on wet acrylic medium. Prismalo work better than stabilo, I will try caran dache tomorrow and report back.
